Highlights of the Position
Under the supervision of a Pathologist or Lab Medical Director, assists in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen dissections, performance of human postmortem examinations, if necessary, and assists the Pathologists in the implementation and monitoring of the Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement Program in Anatomic Pathology.
- Assures appropriate specimen accessioning, by assisting processors or grossing technicians with correct specimen definitions
- Ensures that Pathology is knowledgeable of clinical history, laboratory data, x-rays, and scans when indicated
- Describes gross anatomic features and dissecting surgical specimens-details using dictation or voice recognition systems
- Prepares tissue for microscopic examination including preparation of frozen sections and permanent sections for light, electron, and immunofluorescent microscopy
- Obtaining biological specimens for analysis (bacterial and viral cultures, toxicological material, etc.) and performing special techniques as directed by the Pathologist
- Photographing all pertinent specimens and microscopic slides as directed by the Pathologist
- Collates and reports at Laboratory or Medical conferences the Pathology Quality Program results
- Performs special quality investigations as requested
- Assists in the organization and coordination of Anatomic Pathology
- Assures that the pathology information system is up to date with nomenclature and descriptions and correctly associated with billing
- Oversees the procedures and policies within the gross cutting room
- Other duties at times may be assigned by Laboratory Medical Director
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
A candidate/graduate of an American Association of Pathologist' Assistants (AAPA)/NAACLS educational program. If candidate is
eligible to sit for the AAPA Fellowship Examination or is certified, this would be preferred.
Experiences Pathologist Assistant preferred; new grads will be accepted.
