The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Cornell University, seeks a mission-focused and team oriented Medical Technologist to assist in the education, diagnostic and research efforts of the Clinical Pathology and Comparative Coagulation laboratories at the Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC).
The mission of the AHDC is to improve the health of food and fiber producing animals, companion animals, sport and recreational animals, exotic animals, and wildlife. These activities protect and improve public health, promote environmental stewardship, and foster economic growth.
The Clinical Pathology laboratory provides timely, high quality testing of animal specimens in the areas of hematology, diagnostic cytology, clinical chemistry and immunology, and urinalysis.
The Comparative Coagulation laboratory provides veterinarians and biomedical researchers, comprehensive testing and consultation services for the diagnosis and characterization of blood coagulation disorders in animals.
What you will do: The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Perform a comprehensive range of research and diagnostic testing in the Clinical Pathology and Comparative Coagulation laboratories on a rotational basis.
- Receive, accession, and distribute samples on an as needed basis.
- Record, review, and interpret test results; add supplemental testing as necessary.
- Assist with the preparation of reagents and maintenance of chemical and laboratory supply inventories.
- Adhere to all established laboratory safety procedures and assist to uphold the Quality system as instructed.
- Provide guidance and information to internal and external customers; monitor, respond to and triage customer communications.
- Maintain proficiency with unit, organization, and university computer systems and instrumentation software and assist with technical, safety, and computer training as needed.
- Monitor and maintain job-related certifications and training; proactively seek development opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Employees of the Animal Health Diagnostic Center must adhere to the AHDC Quality Assurance system, confidentiality statement, standard operating procedures, and organizational policies.
Employees are expected to meet all of the Cornell University Staff Skills for Success, which are essential for individual and organizational success. Employees may be required to receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.
The person in this position is expected to work 39 hours per week. While normal business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, specific schedules may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, University holidays, and scheduled breaks.
What you have:
- Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, or a related field, with up to two years of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Excellent relational, oral, and written communication skills; ability to clearly communicate across levels; collaborative with an affinity for developing and maintaining strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience with a variety of computer programs, with the aptitude to learn new software.
- Excellent analytical and critical thinking, and troubleshooting.
- Excellent self-management practices to successfully organize contending priorities to meet timelines.
- Aptitude to handle delicate, confidential information with tact and discretion.
- Strong attention to accuracy and detailed record-keeping.
- Works well both individually and within a team environment; ability to foster a team environment while meeting individual and unit goals in accordance with the broader mission.
- Propensity to work with and represent the work unit professionally and ethically with tact, diplomacy, and advocacy, while creating a high quality and respectful work environment.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time at benches, biological safety cabinets, microscopes, or while using laboratory equipment.
- Demonstrated understanding of and support for the importance of effective and honest feedback.
If you have all those things, great! Here are some preferred qualifications:
- NYS Medical Technologist licensure; ASCP certification.
- Experience adhering to universal precautions and safe handling of potentially infectious materials.
- Experience in biology or diagnostic laboratory.
- Familiarity with coagulation assays.
- Experience working within an organization with an established quality assurance system.
