The Pathology Specialist, under the supervision of a Pathologist, independently plans and carries out assignments in order to accomplish the goals of the service, plays a key role in the quality control process, and initiates and completes new projects which extend the applications of current technologies and incorporate new technological advances. Surgical Pathology: The incumbent performing under the supervision of the Pathologist is responsible for managing all daily Surgical Pathology functions. S/he works independently to perform these highly complex functions, or in collaboration with one or more pathology resident(s), medical student(s), technician(s), and technologist(s). The incumbent's thorough understanding of the gross appearance of pathologic processes in a wide variety of patient samples is necessary to allow him/her to adapt traditional methods to handle unique cases containing unknown abnormalities. Laboratory Management: Laboratory inspections: The incumbent is responsible for maintaining regulatory compliance related to the anatomic pathology lab on a daily basis. Reviews regulatory criteria, ensures all procedures and protocols are maintained up to date with regulatory criteria, prepares work areas for inspection, and participates in the inspection process as required by his/her supervisor. Continuing medical education: The incumbent teaches other health care workers including technicians, technologists, nurses, and administrative personnel, about various aspects of Anatomic Pathology. Anatomic Pathology protocol development: The incumbent, under the supervision of a Pathologist, develops or participates in the development of Anatomic Pathology protocols. The incumbent evaluates new procedures for incorporation into the lab, and assesses the effectiveness of the procedures once in place. The incumbent is familiar with the requirements of accreditation agencies and works to ensure that Anatomic Pathology services are in compliance with same. Autopsy and Cytopathology: Under the supervision of the Pathologist, the incumbent will supervise all activities related to the Autopsy and Cytopathology services. Anatomic Pathology Laboratory Supervisor: The incumbent will oversee the laboratory personnel and overall functioning of the anatomic pathology laboratory under the supervision of pathology section directors and chief of service. Teaching: The incumbent plays a central role in the education and training of residents in pathology, other medical specialties, regarding the practice of Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology and Autopsy.
