The Ralph Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC is searching for a MT(ASCP) or MT(AMT) certified Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist to join their dynamic healthcare team. The MT/CLS serves in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service with the responsibility for all testing performed in Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Immunohematology (Blood Bank), Microbiology, and Immunology sections at the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC, a tertiary healthcare facility that provides acute, intermediate, primary, psychiatric, and long-term care 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week and on public holidays.
The MT/CLS is required to work their assigned tour of duty with rotating weekends and holidays. The MT/CLS will perform highly specialized testing in order to assist healthcare providers in rendering a definitive diagnosis and assists with therapeutic drug monitoring. This is considered the full performance level for nonsupervisory positions. The MT/CLS at this level develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results. Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques, and require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision.
Comprehensive knowledge of professional MT principles, practices, concepts and theories providing for sound independent work.
Processes specimens including CAP performance surveys using equipment, instruments, computers, or techniques that are necessary to prepare them for specific analysis
Responds to time factors to ensure that the physiologic state and integrity of the specimen is maintained
Prepares reagents, controls, and standard solutions
Verifies correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks and monitoring
Calibrates, standardizes, adjusts and maintains instruments
Performs routine maintenance, troubleshoots instruments; performs and calculates results for a variety of tests
Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols
Recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunction; locates and implements corrections
Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports
Identifies the cause of common problems and makes simple repairs
Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and accepted assay procedures
Correlates quantitative data with patient data (i.e., history, medications) to verify results
Performs additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results
Work Hours: Two shifts available 8am-4:30pm and 4pm-12am. You will rotate weekends and holidays
Mandatory Requirements: Applicants must be MT(ASCP) or MT(AMT) certified Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist
Education: BS in Clinical Laboratory Sciences and must be a US citizen.
New graduates will be considered. New graduates would start as GS-07 and have one year to complete MT(ASCP) or MT(AMT) certifications.
