The Executive Administrator will be responsible for the financial and administrative functions for the Department of Pathology in alignment with the strategies and operational needs of UAB Medicine and The University of Alabama School of Medicine. Serving as the senior business leader, the Executive Administrator will support the vision, strategic plan, and operating objectives of the Department Chairman.
The Department of Pathology takes pride in being a national leader in experimental and translational research. They currently earn approximately $20 million per year in extramural research funding, and last year were ranked #12 for National Institutes of Health grant funding out of all pathology departments in the U.S. The Department is comprised of six divisions: Anatomic Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, Molecular & Cellular Pathology, Genomic Diagnostics and Bioinformatics, Neuropathology, and Forensics.
The Executive Administrator is responsible for direct leadership of ~265 FTEs which includes 84 faculty members who are national experts in a wide range of anatomic and clinical pathology subspecialties, providing state-of-the-art clinical services with over 65,000 AP specimens and 6 million laboratory procedures completed last year.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Professional Activities – Manages and assists program/division directors in the administrative affairs relating to the professional services provided by the department’s faculty and professional staff, which may include such activities as follows.
Coordinates services rendered to all patients including inpatient, out- patient, consultation, partial hospital and day treatment populations.
Administers the department’s risk management program in close association with the Director of Risk Management.
Acts on behalf of the department together with the chairman or program/division directors in the negotiation of contracts for management and professional services with other hospitals, governmental agencies, third party carriers and vendors.
Develops and administers annual budgets for all professional activities in all programs or divisions of the department, the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, the Ambulatory Center, and the Health Services Foundation. Exercises personal judgment in expenditure and control of these budgets. Decisions of high impact or that are sensitive in nature are reviewed with the chairman and/or the program/divisions directors.
Responsible for management of all departmental assets and investments of capital in a manner to maximize returns.
Academic and Institutional Responsibilities – Directs the departmental administrative interfaces and programs with UAB.
Serves as the primary interface with the Dean’s offices to assure that all policies and procedures are followed. This may include faculty appointments, records maintenance and administrative coordination of educational activities.
Assists in establishing in-service education and training programs for staff, residents, medical students and other employees. May have additional academic responsibilities including teaching curricular courses in areas of professional expertise. Where appropriate, may also assist in educational or training programs involving related University-wide programs or programs provided to the community or to professional organizations.
Responsible for management of the department’s personnel activities to assure the employment of high quality technical support personnel development of a reasonable wage and compensation program that is effective and competitive; institution of employee communication and relations system to ensure high morale, continuing upgrading and promotional opportunities; establishment and promotion of an affirmative action program to ensure equal opportunity for minority female and handicapped employees and applicants. Operational and Technical Responsibilities – May be responsible in conjunction with the chairman, medical director or program/division directors for administrative and operational management. These responsibilities may include independent authority in management of the following:
Day-to-day management of the operations of all department services provided throughout UAB Medicine.
Develops, monitors, and maintains a patient identification, movement and record flow system that will assure effective care of the patient and efficient interface with nursing, other departments and external users.
Coordinates these activities and their complex interfaces with access, emergency and consultation services with other clinical departments, Hospital, and other affiliated or related groups.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in a business, finance, or a related field required. MBA, MSHA, or other relevant, Master’s degree or equivalent certification, e.g., CPA preferred.
Minimum of five years administrative/managerial experience in comparable health care operation required.
Experience with computerized data management systems and demonstrated expertise in third party reimbursement a must.
